So, in my last journal entry I mentioned that I might get out another post before 2015 hit. Nope.
So, as something of an excuse for lack of updates, it seems a great big review of 2014 is in order.

First off I'd like to give a big thank you to :iconpraxcrown5: for the recent gift of Deviantart premium time. I'll be trying to use it to add some more interesting elements to my profile, as well as using Deviantart's Sketchfab journal integration (see below.)

First off, I would again like to highlight the great art trades that I did with the awesome
:icondaroneasa: and :iconpraxcrown5: You can see the results of my side of both trades in my gallery, and I highly encourage anyone interested to check out their galleries as well. The subject of both trade pieces, as well as an extra sketch that I received from :icondaroneasa: were all characters from my personal writing canon (more on that below.)

Also over the course of this year I have had the opportunity to commission a number of excellent pieces from :iconlady-owl:, also of characters from my writing canon, as well as a reference sheet for one of my original alien species:
Dactan Species by Lady-Owl
Harbinger of Change by Lady-OwlSpeaker For The Silent by Lady-Owl
Aggressive Business Plan by Lady-Owl

In news related to my own work, I have begun uploading my models to Sketchfab, a site that allows for viewing models in interactive 3D in a browser. You can check out my models at sketchfab.com/Doug7070

In future I will be uploading many of my models to Sketchfab. If I post a render of a model that is also up on my Sketchfab account, I will be putting a link to it in the description of the piece on Deviantart, so keep an eye out for that.
I also post models that are currently in progress and aren't yet seen on my Deviantart account to Sketchfab, so if you're interested in what's to come, be sure to have a look over there.

Finally I'd like to put forth some more information on my less visible creative pursuit, that being my writing.
While I don't have any literature posted in my Deviantart gallery (or anywhere else online), I have been quietly working for several years now on a project which has progressively grown into a full blown science fiction universe. I am currently working on a full first novel, which I hope to complete and take to publishing and eventually turn into a series of indeterminate length. I have no solid plans for when it will be released (when it's done), or how exactly I am going to publish it (I am looking at a range of options there), but in 2014 I became more connected to my writing than I was previously, and have been ramping up my drive to write to what might be considered a near-obsessive level.
While I won't divulge any exact points regarding the plot of the in-progress novel, I will say that it, and the rest of my writing in general, heavily involves the following themes under the sci-fi umbrella:
  • Personhood of alien species
  • Moral ambiguity
  • Realistic sci-fi technology and societal use of technology
  • Large scale military conflict
  • Exploration of novel character archetypes
In the course of talking about my writing, I would also like to give a very heartfelt mention to :icondaroneasa:. I had the good fortune of meeting her early in 2014, and since then have had some truly enlightening discussions on various writing topics. It's safe to say that her input has had a hugely positive effect on my writing efforts. I would strongly advise anyone interested in good sci-fi to give her profile a look and keep an eye out for her future works.

So, with all that said and another year done and gone, here's to a strong 2015. I hope the new year finds everyone well, and rest assured that I do actually have more stuff on the way, however slow the pace might be.
  • Mood: Optimism
  • Listening to: A Perfect Circle - The Outsider (Apocalypse Mix)
  • Reading: The Calypsis Project
  • Playing: War Thunder; Elite: Dangerous
  • Eating: Pork Roast
  • Drinking: Monster Energy

Managed to stream successfully for a while tonight, from all accounts it seems that I managed to output a fairly smooth stream with acceptable resolution using OBS to broadcast to Picarto.tv.
I may give it another go in the near future.
I'll be testing out livestreaming some 3D modeling work with Picarto.tv tonight (12/27/2014) starting in the 7:15 PM EST area, so if anyone wants to drop by and see my stuff in progress, don't be shy!
